GeoTrek 2009 - A Green Geocaching Experience
BC Parks, the British Columbia Geocaching Association (BCGA), and Project Blue Sky are collaborating to host GeoTrek 2009 - a fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly game, allowing participants to explore BC’s spectacular provincial parks and celebrate the upcoming 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
100 caches have been placed in secret locations across the province, for geocachers to discover. Approximately 50 caches will be hidden in BC Parks locations, and the other half will be hidden in urban locations. The geocache containers will be filled with special tokens, such as pins and collectible coins from BC Parks, Project Blue Sky, and the BCGA.
Geocaching is a popular outdoor recreation activity that involves using Global Positioning System (GPS) units to locate hidden containers, called geocaches. Participants can then share their experiences online.
How you can Participate
GPS coordinates and other details are available on the B.C. Geocaching Association website.
For information about BC Parks including location maps, park maps, specific park features and trails information, check the BC Parks website.
Track Your Carbon Emmissions
Participants are encouraged to enter their information on the Project Blue Sky website to show how they reduced their carbon footprint by using green transportation methods to find the geocaches.
Project Blue Sky, which was launched by Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes and students from the Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver, uses the latest in online digital tools to measure caorbon emission reductions. Project Blue Sky’s ultimate goal is to collect one billion kilometres worth of carbon-cutting contributions before March 2010.
Geocaching Policy
For those engaged in Geocaching activities, BC Parks has developed a Geocaching policy to help protect the natural values of BC’s provincial parks. Find out more about BC Parks’ Geocaching Policy [PDF 30KB].
