Ministry of Environment

Integrated Pest Management

Welcome

The Ministry of Environment administers the British Columbia Integrated Pest Management Act and Regulations, which:

  • regulates the sale, use and handling of pesticides in the province; and
  • promotes an Integrated Pest Management approach to managing pests.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark has committed to exploring banning the unnecessary use of pesticides for the health and safety of our communities. Any new regulations will take into consideration the views of the public and stakeholders such as the forestry and agriculture industries. We also need to be mindful of the need to protect food security and prevent invasive weeds from harming the natural environment. The ministry conducted a web-based public consultation on the cosmetic use of pesticides between December 16, 2009 and February 15, 2010. The consultation generated more than 8,000 responses and a wide range of opinions and ideas. Information collected will help inform the next steps.

The B.C. government has put together a bipartisan committee to consider what potential legislation would look like for a ban on the unnecessary use of pesticides. For more information on the work of the committee, please visit their website at: http://www.leg.bc.ca/pesticidescommittee/index.htm.
