Technical Guidance 4. Soil Vapour Investigations

This document provides property owners guidance on completing soil vapour investigations to assess risks to human health from vapour intrusion into indoor or outdoor air settings. It assumes that the person carrying out the investigation has an adequate understanding of soil vapour transport processes in the subsurface, and of factors influencing vapour intrusion into above ground air environments. It is based on a report prepared for the ministry by the Science Advisory Board of British Columbia.

For site characterization and risk assessment purposes such as screening level risk assessments, the ministry requires that soil vapour concentrations be measured before indoor and outdoor air quality are characterized. Potential indoor and outdoor air exposures can then be calculated by multiplying measured soil vapour concentrations by a vapour attenuation factor to account for fate and transport processes between the subsurface and above ground environments.
